First 5 Ingredients
Chicken – skin, meat and bone. Before cooking is measured with moisture content. This allows it to be at beginning of ingredients list because water makes it heavy. After cooking it loses most of its nutrients (as well as the water), making the final product lighter and actually low in protein. Still considered a high quality ingredient despite all this.
Chicken meal – before cooking, the water content is removed. It doesn’t lose most of its nutrients during the cooking process. Because of this, it is a more concentrated form of protein, and has a lot more protein than chicken does after cooking.
Turkey meal – also a concentrated source of protein, made from turkey. The sources of turkey vary from high quality to waste. Following both chicken and chicken meal in this list is positive.
Potatoes – carbohydrate sources often found in dry cat food. It is normally used in these dry foods as a bulking agent, to bulk up the food.
Peas – used more for its binding and bulking of food. They provide a little nutrition but not enough for it to be here for its nutritional properties. Another source of carbohydrate.
|80% of the protein is from meat sources||Grain and veggie free: still high carbs|
|Balanced omega 3 to omega 6 ratio||Potatoes and peas|
|All natural ingredients||Fish meal|
|Helpful antioxidants and probiotics||Not good for non-active cats|
Canidae Pure Elements limits the amount of ingredients that are present. Aside from the vitamins, minerals, and probiotics there are 8 main ingredients in the meal (minus natural flavoring). Unlike others, the formula is free from fruits and vegetables. Having 4 meals (chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish) brings up the protein counts. Carbohydrate counts are on the high side like all dry foods; therefore carb substitutes like potatoes are very much present. Older formulas had ingredients like potato protein present. This shows this brand is conscious of what is stated on the ingredients list. Overall a solid dry food.
