First 5 Ingredients
Chicken Meal – this is essentially rendered chicken. During the rendering process, water and fat content has been removed. This is a very good protein source, often times better than chicken itself. It has a higher protein percentage than chicken. Questionable ingredients are usually used in the making of chicken meal.
Chicken Fat – provides an abundance of Omega 6 fatty acids, perhaps too much in large amounts. A source of energy and is actually essential in a cats diet. Also makes the food more palatable.
Tapioca – an alternative carbohydrate source in the form of starch. This allows companies to use the ‘grain-free’ label. It is used as a binder for the food, making it stick together.
Chicken – the meat, skin, and bone. It has all the moisture content present before the cooking process of the cat food. This means that the final product has very little protein in it as it was destroyed during the cooking process. Still considered one of the best ingredients in a formula.
Menhaden Fish Meal – much like chicken meal, this is a concentrated source of protein as well as a source of fatty acids (not a great source as the oils are usually extracted from the final product). Fish meal in pet food is more often than not made from poorer quality and rank fish. It also is a source of mercury.
|Majority of formula from animal sources||Fish meal isn’t ideal|
|Free from grains||Carbohydrate substitutes found|
|Good amount of protein for a dry food||Not enough research on montmorillonite clay as an ingredient in cat food|
|Balanced nutrition||While it doesn’t dominate the formula, a lot of fruits and vegetables|
Compared to other top brands available, Natures Variety Instinct limits the number of ingredients you don’t want to see in dry food. The majority of the protein is from meat and the protein level is good for a dry food. The carbohydrate levels are not ideal; they are on the high side however that is expected in dry cat food. This is a type of dry food that you have to portion control meaning not letting your cat eat it whenever it wants to (but that pretty much can go for all dry foods). Overall, this dry food is of great quality and one of the top dry foods you can purchase at your nearest pet store or online.
